First-time Firefly? *Volunteer!*
Did you just register for a ticket to your first Firefly, or are you about to? Welcome!!
Allow me to initiate you into one of the many things that makes Firefly so cool: our volunteering culture.
Firefly follows the principle of Participation, meaning that we don’t have one group of people who put Firefly on and another group of people who come soak it in – we ALL make Firefly happen!
You’re not too new to volunteer – in fact, volunteering is one of the best ways to become a part of Firefly. By volunteering, you get to meet more people, be more in the know, and get the full Firefly experience.
Of course, it can be intimidating to jump into a volunteer role without knowing what it’ll be like! So our lead volunteers have recommended some roles that are good for first-timers. Check them out:
- Radio Volunteer – escape the hustle and bustle to spend some quality time with our radio inventory.
- Sound Volunteer – do you love party-hopping all night long? Are you willing to do it sober and with a sound meter in your hand?
- Stage Set-Up Crew – this role is a short time commitment with a far-reaching impact!
- Art Truck Volunteer – loading up art before the event is a great way to meet Firefly artists before the event starts.
- Art Tour Guide – show people the art and share what the artist had to say about it – silly embellishments are encouraged!
- Gnome – are you the kind of person who just wants to be helpful? Gnomes fill in for other volunteers, fetch things for them, and generally make things run more smoothly.
- Accessibility Brute – lift heavy things for people with mobility issues!
- Coffee Kitchen – keep Fireflies caffeinated!
- Perimeter Volunteer – heroically sacrifice your view of the burn to keep other people from getting burned!
- Gate Volunteer – be the first to welcome Fireflies to the event!
- Graveyard Volunteer – sign up with friends, bring a warm beverage, and watch the Gate overnight or during a burn.
- Greeter – welcome entrants into Firefly!
- Lost & Found Hero – make new friends while reuniting them with their lost possessions!
- Exodus Field Sweeper – say goodbye to Firefly with meditative yet purposeful strolls through the field, ensuring we leave the land as we found it.
- Parking Volunteer – direct people to the right parking lot for them.
- Signage Volunteer – get familiar with the land by hanging or collecting signs.
For now, look through the links and play around with the Volunteer Role Finder (you may need to click “use template” first) to find a handful of roles that would be a good fit for you.
Then on May 10th when ticket sales open, sign up for shifts! We recommend two or more shifts per person. You can sign up for shifts even if you’re waitlisted.
